I'm a beginning + knitter - three or so years ago my friend Linda decided to teach me to knit, a decision I'm sure she shakes her head about to this day. We might as well be mirror images. Even though she taught me to knit, I do everything opposite of the way she taught me. She 'picks', I 'throw', she uses double points to knit socks, I use two circulars. I even made her write out the direction on turning a sock heel line by line.. and still did it backwards!
Eventually, I figured out what worked for me. After watching Linda spin yarn on her lovely spinning wheel, I attempted to spin roving on a drop spindle. There's a reason we are opposites, it made no sense to me. But I did find something I liked to do in the fiber arts. Dye yarn. If I couldn't spin it, I could at least take those nice, off white skeins of alpaca and wool and turn them into something pretty.
I mainly dye using Kool Aid. Yep, the stuff you buy in the store for your kids. It's fairly safe (don't breathe in the citric acid) and I can do it in the microwave. The whole big pot on the stove simmering with dye thing never worked for me. I like the instant gratification of microwave dyeing. I'll play on the stove someday - when it's cooler outside.
